Step 1: Analyze last year’s marketing strategies

Ask yourself, in regards to your business’ marketing, what exactly did you do and why exactly did you do it? If things didn’t work out as expected, what would you differently if you could turn back time?

Understanding Analytics

Go into your analytics data and compare, say, September 2018 with September 2017. You could compare any of this year’s months, but many companies have different levels of business at certain times of the year, so comparing the same months in different years should give you a more accurate comparison. Knowledge of how to read and understand analytics is essential to providing you with the information you need to evaluate the effectiveness of your ongoing marketing. Upping your Facebook analytics or Google analytics skills might be something to consider for 2019.

Look at the different avenues you’ve used for marketing and see what’s working the best. Google Analytics on your website will show you if your marketing campaigns have been productive for you. If you know how to read analytics, you can see extensive demographics on your audience so you can be sure you’re saying the right things to the right people. You can see traffic to specific pages of your website to know which pages are getting the most interest and you can even see how long visitors spend on the page. If you do Facebook advertising, you can look at our Facebook Insights to find out which posts encourage the most actions, at what times your audience seems to viewing and reacting to your posts and/or ads, and which don’t work as well.

Step 2: Make your message really count

What kind of messages work best for your audience. Are you using your best storytelling techniques to really encourage comments and ‘likes’ for your posts? Improving your storytelling and messaging should definitely be a big goal for 2019.  Always make sure what you’re posting is relevant and interesting and encourage your audience to respond in some way.

Content Checklist

Most of all, make sure your posts aren’t always about what YOU need or what YOU want. Of course you want to promote your business as often as you can, but your ultimate goal is to become a resource for information. You want your audience to enjoy, be enriched, be happy with the great things you share with them.

Step 3: Consider using more video

Marketing has always put a lot of importance in video because it’s much more exciting than still photos and people are much more apt to watch a short video than read a bunch of text.

Most of the social media platforms are making it easier to post video – Facebook lets you put video on your cover photo of your business page and do live videos of events or podcasts easily. Several social platforms have ‘video stories’ now so you can take a series of videos and really tell a story about your business to your audience.

And let’s not forget about YouTube.  Certainly post every video you’ve got there and make sure you put in descriptions and keywords. You Tube is the most used social media venue – not Facebook. Think of all the super cute puppy and kitty videos 🙂

Step 4:  Don’t overlook viable platforms

Facebook has usership by a ridiculous number of people of all ages and types, so it’s pretty smart to be there. Have you overlooked Twitter? Your business may do extremely well on LinkedIn or Pinterest or Instagram – depending on the nature of your business and the ages and interest of the people you’re trying to reach. It’s good to know the facts on the marketing avenues available to you as well as how best to use them.

With Facebook becoming a crowded place for business marketing because of it’s popularity, it might be time to explore alternatives that you’ve never considered in the past.

Overall, many businesses will find the need to ‘shake things up’ in their marketing strategies for 2019. Try some new things to increase your companies revenue, but don’t make the mistake of NOT KNOWING what your results are. If you’re currently paying for marketing that you are not sure is working for you because there’s no way to gauge it, chances are you’re doing the wrong thing. It makes sense to think that a marketing plan that doesn’t cause you to lose money, or even one that keeps your revenue strain relatively level, should just be left to slide – in a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” kind of way. Consider this:

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” Albert Einstein
